Events on a Visiting Day

Registration from 9.15 am

You can arrive as soon after 9.15 am as you wish in order to register and collect your personal itinerary, this will of course depend on the facility tours you have selected for the morning. There is a lot to see and do while in St Andrews! For this reason we strongly recommend that you try to arrive as soon as you can if you want to make the most of your day.

University Walking Tour (60 minutes)

These tours are led by a University Student Ambassador.  Leaving from Lower College Hall they last for one hour and take place on a rolling basis from 9.15 am with the last tour departing at 12 noon.

We try to ensure that groups are normally no larger than twenty people, however, this can be difficult to keep to on some of our busier Visiting Days.

The majority of the tour takes place out-of-doors and takes you around the central streets and buildings of St Andrews. The tour will incorporate a visit to the main University Library and finish with the Student Ambassador taking you to the foyer of one of our Halls of Residence where a Hall Tour Guide will meet you.

Subjects covered include

  • the University's history.
  • student traditions.
  • student life.

Visitors are actively encouraged to ask questions of their Student Ambassador tour guide.

Halls of Residence (20 minutes)

In order to provide our current student residents with privacy and security, the Hall of Residence tours can only take place on a rolling basis between the hours of 9.30 am and 12.00 pm. The University Walking Tour will end with your Student Ambassador taking you to the foyer of the hall where a Hall Tour Guide will meet you.

The duration of a typical Hall of Residence Tour is approximately 20 minutes. Most tours include visits to the communal areas, a dining area plus social meeting rooms. Please note that you cannot choose which Hall of Residence you will visit.  This tour is designed to give you a brief insight into one of the many wide ranging types of residential accommodation available to our students.

Sports Centre (30 minutes)

There are two Sports Centre visitor sessions: 10.45-11.15 am and 11.30-12 noon. These are held at the Physical Education Centre located about a ten minute walk out of the town centre.

Experienced Sports Centre staff will give a tour of the facilities and provide you with information on the huge range of sports on offer at St Andrews. You should make your own way to this session.

Music Centre (25 minutes)

The Music Centre in the Younger Hall on North Street will be open to visitors between 11.00 and 11.25 am.

St Andrews has an exceptionally busy musical life. Our facilities are excellent and tuition is available for those interested in singing as well as for those who play instruments. You should make your own way to this session.

Chaplaincy (30 minutes)

This session, normally takes place between 11.30 am and 12 noon at the Chaplaincy Centre at Mansefield, 3 St Mary's Place.  The Chaplaincy works closely with Students Support Services and offers a number of different services and facilities. You should make your own way to this session.

Careers Centre (30 minutes)

This session takes place from 12.10 - 12.40 pm in the main lecture theatre in the Buchanan Building, Union Street.

One of the university Careers Advisers will provide an insight into the graduate job market, the diversity of careers St Andrews graduates go into and the services and opportunities on offer at the university which can significantly enhance your chances of getting into the career of your choice after graduation.

Welcome Talk: St Andrews, Past, Present and Future (30 minutes)

This talk commences at 1.15 pm or 1.30pm prompt and finishes at around 2.00 pm. It is held at various venues around the University.

Your itinerary will inform you of the venue which you should attend. University Ambassadors are on hand to accompany visitors to their first departmental appointment immediately on the conclusion of this talk.

The talks cover subject areas such as:

  • University demography
  • the range and cost of student accommodation
  • student welfare and support
  • sport and recreation
  • the benefits of a degree from the University of St Andrews

You should make your own way to this session.

Visits to Academic Departments (maximum of two; 30-50 minutes each)

These visits take place at 2.15 pm and/or 3.15 pm and each session lasts between 30-50 minutes. You can visit a maximum of two academic departments on a Visiting Day.

Our University Ambassadors will accompany you to your first appointment but you are asked to make your own way to your second appointment of the afternoon (commencing at 3.15pm). These group sessions provide an opportunity for you to meet with an academic member of staff and to learn more about your intended subject area(s).

Useful information

  1. Help with directions
In the morning, please come to Lower College Hall, St Salvator's Quadrangle, North Street.

    Family and friends
You may bring two family members or friends with you to a Visiting Day. However, please note that due to space restrictions in certain venues, we cannot guarantee that there will be room to accommodate those who have travelled with you on some of the departmental visits.

  2. Lunch and refreshments
The University welcomes over 5,000 visitors during each academic year. For this reason, it is not possible to offer refreshments and/or lunch to you during your visit. However, there are many coffee shops and restaurants to choose from.

  3. Visits to academic departments outwith advertised times
For health and safety reasons, we cannot provide access to academic departments and facilities outwith the times stated on your personal itinerary (distributed at registration). Please also note that, due to reasons outwith our control, visiting times to academic departments and facilities may be different to those printed in the University prospectus.

  4. Running late
If for any reason you are running late then it is best to phone ahead on +44 (0)1334 462249. We will tell you exactly where to report when you arrive. Please bear in mind that arriving in the afternoon of a Visiting Day will seriously limit your options of which departments and staff you can visit. Each of the appointments on the booking form is fixed and we cannot rearrange the times when visitors meet with departments and services.

  5. Cancellations
If you have to cancel your visit for any reason, please contact us on +44 (0)1334 462249  as soon as possible. We may be able to assign your place to another prospective student.
