How to use this website

How the website is organised

The current website is essentially split into three sub-sites, targeted at the audience's involvement in the University:

  1. External
    The homepage and related pages are aimed primarily at those who are not current members of the University community, e.g. visitors, prospective students, parents, alumni, etc.

  2. Current Students
    Current undergraduate, postgraduate and non-graduating students (as well as those who have been accepted for a place at the University) have their own homepage, which aims to categorise information according to what the user is trying to do, e.g. tuition fees information is to do with money so can be found under "Money Matters". Current students are encouraged to bookmark this page as their homepage.

  3. Current Staff
    Current members of staff (academic and non-academic, as well as those who work closely with staff members, e.g. external examiners and suppliers) also have their own homepage, which aims to categorise information according to what the user is trying to do. Current staff are encouraged to bookmark this page as their homepage.

Finding the information you need

We've tried to organise the website in as intuitive a way as possible. When looking for content ask yourself:

  • WHO is the information for (e.g. external visitors, current staff, or current students?)
  • WHAT is the information about (e.g. is it an academic matter? or about a policy? or a technical service?)

There is also a search box at the top of every page.

Accessibility

The University of St Andrews website has been designed with accessibility in mind, and should therefore be as accessible to as many modern browsing devices as possible, including screen readers and mobile browsers.

Browser compatibility

This website complies with XHTML and CSS standards as recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a simple mechanism for adding style (e.g. fonts, colours, positioning, spacing, etc.) to Web documents. This site's CSS code is compatible with the following modern browsers:

  • Internet Explorer for Windows (versions 6.0 and above)
  • Firefox (versions 2.0 and above)
  • Opera (versions 8.0 and above)
  • Netscape Navigator (versions 9.0 and above)
  • Safari
  • Camino

We are aware that the website's design currently has issues with the following older browsers; we are working to resolve issues with some of these browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 5.x for Windows and Mac
  • Firefox (versions 1.0.x and 1.5.x)
  • Opera (version 7.x)
  • Netscape Navigator (versions 7.x - 8.x)

Upgrading your browser

If you are using an older browser, including Internet Explorer 6.0, we recommend that you upgrade to a more modern, more secure browser, such as Mozilla Firefox.

Printing pages

A print stylesheet has been created to remove extraneous information (such as page navigation) when sending a page to the printer. When you print a page from the University website the page header, main page content and any related images will be printed, but nothing else.

If you wish to capture a page exactly as it looks on the screen you will need to use either your systems's "Print Screen" facility or a dedicated screen capture application.

Security

You may find as you browse through this website that a number of pages are restricted, requiring you to login before you can access the content.

If you are a member of staff or a student you may be able to access the information using your usual University ID and password.
