Dr Bethan Williams
Executive Officer to the Principal
Bethan Williams is Executive Officer to the Principal. She works closely with the Principal on a day-to-day basis and also with respect to arrangements for the Booker Prize Project, the annual Awards Dinner and high-profile visits. Bethan assists the Principal with preparation for speaking engagements by undertaking research and producing briefing notes. Her role involves liaising with colleagues in the Development Office, and other units, on behalf of the Principal, and she is also secretary of the Senate Business Committee. Her position has recently developed to include managing the administration of arrangements for honorary graduands, and other graduation-related tasks.
Before joining the Principal’s Office in 2009, Bethan worked for the Master of St Catherine’s College, Oxford. She is a graduate of the University of St Andrews, and has a doctorate in mediaeval English.

Dr Fiona Thompson
Executive Officer to the Principal's Office
Fiona Thompson is the Executive Officer to the Principal’s Office. Fiona works with all the members of the Principal’s Office on a variety of strategic projects and on the development and execution of new policies. She also works with Schools and Units to facilitate the flow of management information to inform the members of the PO. Fiona staffs the Principal’s Office meetings and monitors the matters arising. In addition she attends the Heads of Schools’ meetings, PARC and SDG to help co-ordinate actions and communication issues between all these groups and the PO.
Fiona is the main contact for staff and building issues within College Gate and is line-manager to the Reception Staff within the building. She manages the support for the members of the PO to help ensure that the Principal’s Office operates as effectively as possible as an integrated team and oversees the budget for the PO.
Fiona is also responsible for the administration for the Principal's medal, and has recently taken on the co-ordination of the Graduation ceremonies.
Fiona worked in the Planning Office in the University of Bristol for two years following 20 years as a Research Scientist in both Bristol and Glasgow; she has a PhD in molecular virology.

Finance Director
Andy Goor is the Finance Director at the University of St Andrews where he is responsible for leading and developing both long and short term financial plans and strategies along with ensuring financial control is maintained throughout the University.
After graduating with a BA(Hons) in Accounting from Ealing College of Higher Education, he gained an ACMA professional qualification with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Andy has 17 years’ experience within senior finance roles within the healthcare sector across England and Scotland.
In his current role, Andy is responsible for 50 staff within Financial Accounts, Operations, Accounts Payable, Cash Office, Financial Advice and Support (incorporating the Management Accounts and Research Finance Office functions) and Research Business Development and Contracts.

Mr Steve Watt
Chief Information Officer
Steve Watt is Chief Information Officer at the University where he is responsible for leading the Information Technology Unit and for leading technology enabled change across the organisation.
Steve has 16 years of experience within information technology roles, primarily in the higher education sector. He has also worked in the private sector in manufacturing for Low & Bonar Plc and as a consultant across a range of industries. He has worked in both Europe and North America.
Steve holds an MBA from Dundee Business School and is a European Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Chartered IT Professional and a Fellow of the British Computer Society. He joined the University in 2010 to implement a significant change and transformation agenda developed during 2009 following a comprehensive review of central ICT provision.
In his curent role, Steve leads a unit that comprises of around 75 technical and support staff.

Mrs Lorna Sillar
Senior Planning Officer
Lorna Sillar has been responsible since 2008 for facilitating the annual strategic planning process in academic schools and administrative units. Lorna is also responsible for monitoring and reporting the University’s performance against institutional key performance indicators.
A zoology graduate of the University of Glasgow specialising in molecular developmental biology, she was employed as a Research Manager in Teratology, Glaxo Group Research Ltd (GSK) in Hertfordshire from 1981-1984. Lorna pursued postgraduate neurochemistry research in the University of Bath’s Biology and Biochemistry Department, latterly supported by a Wellcome Trust Research Assistantship 1985-1989. Lorna subsequently worked for the Longman Group (part of Pearson PLC) as Sales and Marketing Manager in the Commercial Electronic Publishing Division, from 1989 to 1994.
From 1994-1998, Lorna was Director of the Centre for Sponsored Programmes, the University’s office responsible for the administration of research grants and contracts and also technology transfer including the formation of spin-out companies. She became the Director of St Andrews Research and Enterprise Services (RES) (Medical, Life and Environmental Sciences) in the Technology Transfer Office from 1998-2008.

Research Policy Office
Dr Helen Reddy
Senior Research Policy Officer
Dr Helen Reddy was appointed as Senior Research Policy Officer at the University of St Andrews in 2004. She is responsible for co-ordinating and managing activities in order to achieve the research objectives of the University, working with the Deputy Principal and Vice Principal for Research.
Helen graduated with a PhD in Cardiovascular Research from the University of Edinburgh in 1989. After three years working as a Clinical Biochemist in the NHS she spent two years carrying out post-doctoral research in a pharmaceutical company in Palo Alto, USA. On returning to the UK she worked on cell signalling with Professor Sir Philip Cohen at the University of Dundee before moving into research administration.
She has a long-standing interest in the management of research information and was the lead on the introduction of the new Research Information System (PURE) into the University in 2010. Helen is co-ordinating and planning our institutional submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and represents the University on a variety of national groups related to REF and research information management.
