Dr Gillian MacIntosh
Executive Officer to the University Court & Senate

Gillian is responsible for providing the administration and support required for the smooth operation of the University Court (the governing body of the University of St Andrews), the University Senate and their major committees. Gillian serves as clerk to Court, Academic Council (for Senate), the Audit & Risk Committee, the Governance & Nominations Committee and the Planning & Resources Committee. Gillian also provides advice and guidance to Court members on all matters pertaining to the administration of the governing body, including arrangements for the recruitment, induction and appraisal of Court members, and the administration of elections to Court from its various constituencies. The Court & Senate Office is also responsible for the handling of matters related to student discipline and misconduct, non-academic student appeals and complaints and academic student appeals and complaints.

Gillian also holds an Honorary Research Fellowship in the School of History, is project manager of the Scottish Parliament Project and editor of the Records of the Parliaments of Scotland online database (www.rps.ac.uk). Gillian is author of a number of works on the history of the seventeenth-century Scottish Parliament, including The Scottish Parliament under Charles II 1660-81 (Edinburgh University Press, 2007).

Dr Karen Stewart
Court & Senate Office Secretary

As Secretary to the Court & Senate Office, Karen is responsible for providing comprehensive administrative support to the Executive Officer to the University Court & Senate. Karen’s role involves interaction with both members of Court and Senate, as well as being a key point of contact for students, especially in relation to the administration of student appeals and complaints and providing advice thereon to students and to University staff. Karen’s position involves direct liaison with individual members of Court and Senate, members of the Principal’s Office, Academic Schools and many of the University’s service units

Prior to moving to St Andrews, Karen obtained a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University and subsequently successfully completed her PhD, in the same department, researching youth and elite sport. Her thesis, entitled Expert Performers’ Socialisation into Sport, examined the sporting pathways of elite athletes and considered the influence of significant others within this developmental process. Karen’s research generated international interest and she has presented papers at conferences in the UK, Finland and the United States.
