How to apply?
Tips for completing the form
When applying for accommodation please note we cannot guarantee which type of accommodation you will be allocated to. Our most popular is Standard Catered. In 2015-16 we could only allocate about 60% of applicants who put standard catered as their first preference the remainder were allocated to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th preference. The standard catered rooms are predominately shared for entrant students. Andrew Melville has a majority of single rooms but again we usually have more students applying than we have available rooms. 66% of applicants who put Andrew Melville as their first preference received an offer for this type of accommodation. Standard self-catered is another first preference that is usually oversubscribed. In 2015-16 we could only offer 32% of applicants to this type of accommodation.
Please ensure that you read about the different options available on our Residences page. As we have several small halls, we ask that you apply by the 'type' of residence and you must specify a different type for each of the four preferences as we cannot accept the names of the individual halls. There are five different types of accommodation available which are:
- Ensuite self-catered - This choice includes David Russell Apartments and Agnes Blackadder Hall.
- Ensuite catered - This option includes David Russell Apartments, John Burnet Annexe and a limited number of rooms in University Hall. Please note that David Russell Apartments has 500 catered rooms and John Burnet 36 rooms.
- Standard catered - This options includes John Burnet Hall, McIntosh Hall, St Regulus Hall, St Salvator's Hall and University Hall.
- Andrew Melville Hall - This is the only hall that is specified as an option for you to choose as it is cheaper than the other standard catered halls and has only one shared room.
- Standard self-catered - Albany Park.
If you have a special dietary requirement or other queries regarding catering in halls, please contact our catering department on firstname.lastname@example.org for further advice on what can be offered to you in our halls. Once you have been allocated a place, please email the Chef Manager for that hall who will be happy to discuss your specific requirements. Please Note: If you have a severe nut allergy we would recommend you contact us before you apply as we may not be able to offer you catered accommodation.
What will happen next?
Student Accommodation Services do not pre-allocate accommodation to students. Allocation begins in July for students whose offer of a place is Unconditional and who have confirmed their acceptance of this place with Admissions. Thereafter, allocations continue throughout the summer as and when final examination results are received and the status of individual UCAS applications changes from Conditional to Unconditional.
Once accommodation has been allocated you will receive a link by email directing you to your offer, which needs a reply within 10 days. As we have experienced problems with some email addresses not accepting the automated offer we advise you to also check any junk or spam folders regularly from July onwards if you have accepted an unconditional offer. Accommodation contracts are for a fixed period of the full academic session unless you are only studying here for one semester. Once you have activated your St Andrews email account all correspondence will automatically be sent to this email address so please check it regularly.
