Wardennial services

Within each hall of residence there is a wardennial team, consisting of a Warden and a team of Assistant Wardens (in David Russell Apartments, Fife Park and in Agnes Blackadder Hall this includes a Deputy Warden). The wardennial team has a lead role in working with residents, the hall committee and the residential services team in fostering a sense of community and hall identity. They actively encourage residents to join in and feel part of the hall; organising with residents and the hall committee events such as game nights, film nights, activities, Balls and excursions.

The Warden and Assistant Wardens provide out-of-hours contact and support and links to day-time services to ensure that help is available round-the-clock. They are a first point of contact if a health crisis occurs, if a student is in distress or is experiencing difficulties. Their role is one of a mentor, adviser and supporter for all the residents within the hall.

The Warden and wardennial team are also responsible for student discipline and keeping order in the hall.

All Wardens and Assistant Wardens are professionally trained and are qualified to provide first aid.

The wardennial team is on duty and available between 7pm and 8am every weekday (Monday to Friday) and between 2pm and 8am at weekends (Saturday and Sunday). They also provide drop-in sessions in each hall. Please check the information for specific halls, below, the times that these drop-in sessions are available and for specific contact details for each Warden.

The wardennial team is a part of Student Services and report to Rob Warren, Assistant Director of Student Services, Students’Association Building, 9 St Marys Place - telephone (01334 46)2720, email rw40@st-andrews.ac.uk, or contact the ASC (Advice and Support Centre), 79 North Street - telephone (01334 46)2020, email theasc@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Rob Warden: Rob Warren

Hi, I am Rob, the Warden of Agnes Blackadder Hall. I live in the hall and have an 8 year old son, Archie, who you will probably see around the hall from time to time (or more likely racing down the road on his bike or kicking a ball around on the grass). I am also Assistant Director of Student Services where, amongst my other duties I lead the counselling team and have overall responsibility for the wardennial service.

Along with my colleagues in the wardennial team I look forward to welcoming you and getting to know you.  You may hear Agnes Blackadder Hall referred to as New Hall by some students, or even staff.  Our hall was "New Hall" for many years, before being given a new formal name in 2012.  Agnes Blackadder Hall is named after the University’s first female graduate; a name celebrate, inspire and live up to.

Find out more about Agnes Forbes Blackadder.

The hall provides a home for around 540 people and is a diverse community, including freshers and returning students from all over the world. It is a very busy hall and the wardennial team and the hall committee work hard to make sure that it remains a sociable and friendly place to live. We will be putting on many events in hall during the year ranging from open film nights to sporting competitions and of course the famous Bub Quiz. To get the best out of your time here I encourage you all to get involved.

Being such a large hall I may not realistically get to meet each one of you individually, so make sure you come along to social events and join in hall activities and say hello.

Also the team and I are here to help and if you are finding anything difficult or have something that is perplexing or causing you concern get in touch. We are here to offer you a listening ear and our support.

The hall is what you make it and we are here to help you make it a great hall!

Matt Stillman - Student Services Warden: Matt Stillman

Hello, My name is Matt Stillman and I am the Warden of Albany Park. I moved here with my wife Karen and our two young children Declan (8) and Jocelyn (1) in February when I took up post at Albany Park. As Albany Park is my family's home, the management of Albany Park and it being an enjoyable and safe place to live is of utmost importance to me. During the day, I work as one of the counsellors at Student Services. Together with a team of 3 Assistant Wardens, I aim to ensure each Albany Park resident (often called Albanites) resides in a place that they feel enhances their overall student experience and where they feel safe, their needs are met personally and socially and they are able to focus on their studies. Myself and my team pride ourselves on being approachable and responsive.

We are available via email, telephone or through catching us 'out and about ' in Albany Park. Whether you have questions about the town, issues with flatmates, troubles with noise, are experiencing any form of emotional turmoil or you have questions or concerns about safety, myself and the rest of the wardennial team are happy to meet with you and try to help you manage any problem you may be faced with.

Stephen Stewart

Warden: Stephen Stewart

Hi, my name is Stephen Stewart and I am the Warden at Andrew Melville Hall. I am also the Director of Sport and Exercise at the University. I have 9 years experience working as a Warden at another University. I am married to Karen and have 2 boys, Rory and Calum, all of whom you will see in and around Hall. I am very well supported by 3 Assistant Wardens, Bess, Lenore and Robert and together we are here to make your life easier throughout your time at University. Our aim is to ease the transition from home dweller to hall reveller and hope to provide a welcoming atmosphere throughout your time in Andrew Melville.

With a hall of over 200 students, meeting you all may take us some time. With this in mind we organise regular High Tables which are popular dinners with fellow residents, invited guests and include a welcome drink. We will also organise other fun social events throughout the year with the aim of creating a communal spirit for our residents which will help to develop a great hall experience. It is important that we get to know all our 'Melvites' so please introduce yourself at any time.

University should be as comfortable as possible. If you feel distressed or just feel something isn't right, please contact us for an informal and confidential chat. We can arrange access to the many University services, staff and facilities available to help students during their stay with us. It is also our responsibility to respond to hall emergency situations as your health and safety is paramount.

Please realise the potential of the Warden and Assistant Warden team and help us make your stay in Melville as comfortable as possible. Andrew Melville Hall will be your home: a place to work, relax and have fun and, if you want to get the best out of your hall life, please get involved!

Toria Johnson - John Burnet WardenWarden: Toria Anne Johnson

Hi, I'm Toria. I've been a part of the wardennial team here at John Burnet since arriving in St Andrews in 2009, and have been the head warden for the last two years. I'm completing my PhD in the School of English, where I specialise (and tutor) in Renaissance drama. I'm originally from Seattle, WA - but I also did my Junior Semester Abroad in St Andrews in 2004 (back when there were still students in Hamilton Hall!).

Located near the Old Course, John Burnet is the smallest of the undergraduate residences (about 145 students), and as a result we have a very close-knit community. In addition to myself, there are three assistant wardens - Nikki Khanna, Richard Taylor, and Rikard Jakelbro, who also live in hall. Together we work with the Residential Service Managers and the Hall Committee to provide a number of events throughout the year, such as quizzes, cheese and wine receptions, holiday parties, study breaks, and movie nights. We want our residents to feel John Burnet is their home - so if you have any questions or problems, please do come and see us. We're easily found in the dining hall, at the events, or with students in the Front Hall area.

Hello, I’m Lara. Academic year 2012/2013 will be my fifth year of being Warden at McIntosh Hall and eighth year in the Wardennial system. My other roles at the University are as Assistant Director and University Discipline Officer in Student Services.

McIntosh has a great sense of community spirit, with many activities and events going on in Hall throughout the year, organised by the Hall Committee, Wardens, Chef Manager and Residential Services Managers.

The team in McIntosh consists of 3 Assistant Wardens, who all live in hall itself, and we are there to help. We will be joining you in the dining room each day, so feel free to say hello, and also to tell us how we can make life in hall better. You should feel at home in hall, so if you are having any problems such as adjusting to University, being bothered by noise or your roommate (!) or have any other issue you’d like to talk to someone about, please get in touch.

Hi, I'm Jamie. I've been the Warden of St Regulus Hall ("Regs") since February 2012. I'm studying for my PhD in the school of Divinity, where I also work as a Research Assistant and Tutor in New Testament studies. I am married to Becky, and we have two young children, who also all live here in hall and add their own contribution to the already fantastic family atmosphere! Regs is a small traditional hall of about 175 residents, perfectly located right near the heart of the old part of town, and together with my capable and enthusiastic team, we work hard to maintain the hall's well-deserved reputation as a supportive and tight-knit community.

If you have any questions about life in Regs, feel free to catch me or any member of the wardennial team at dinner, (I'm often having coffee afterward in the Regs library - follow the sound of the children!).
