Redevelopment of Fife Park

Artist's impression of Fife Park redevelopment

The University of St Andrews is to move ahead with the first phase of plans to redevelop student accommodation at Fife Park and provide 500 additional student bed spaces in town.

The first phase of the project will involve the construction of four new accommodation blocks on farmland to the rear of the existing Fife Park development. A total of 252 bedrooms will be provided in the first-phase new-build at an estimated cost of £12 million, wholly funded by the University.

It is expected that work will start on site later this summer once a contractor has been appointed. Construction of the first phase is scheduled to be complete by September 2010 and the new accommodation will be ready to admit its first students at the start of academic year 2010/2011.

The existing accommodation at Fife Park will remain in use throughout construction of the new blocks.

In later phases, it is planned to demolish Fife Park and replace it with modern fit-for-purpose student accommodation. In total, the replacement of Fife Park and development of new student accommodation will provide 500 additional bed spaces.

This additional capacity will ease the pressure on other accommodation in and around St Andrews.

In keeping with the University's commitment to high standards of sustainability throughout its estate, the design of these buildings incorporate some of the latest developments in this area. Where possible technologies developed by the University's academics and researchers will feature in the buildings.

These web pages are intended to explain the University's plans, keep our students, staff and the local community informed of progress and provide answers to frequently asked questions.

Consultation

In considering plans for Fife Park, the University has consulted with the student population in two open meetings.

It has also held a meeting for local residents to outline proposals.

The Principal's Office has engaged directly with the elected representatives of the Students' Association in discussing both the broader issue of rents, and the wider issues of affordability.  These issues have been discussed at key University meetings where the student body is represented, and the previous and current President of the Students' Association and the Proctor & Provost have had a series of meetings with the intention of coming to an accurate and shared understanding of the situation with regard to University and privately owned accommodation in St Andrews.

The University will continue to consult closely with students, staff and local residents as the development moves forward.

Regular updates will be given on this website.
