Teaching and Research Interests

Barbara’s teaching and research focuses on modern British political and cultural history from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. She is interested in perceptions of the past, consumer culture, nationalism and national identity. Currently, she is writing a monograph on how the late medieval hero, Edward the Black Prince, was used in the Georgian and Victorian eras by groups ranging from royals to radicals. This work, to be published by the Royal Historical Society in their series Studies in History, considers negotiations of the late medieval past through royal reinventions and popular consumption. Barbara is also researching children and consumption of the medieval past from 1880 to 1938 through exhibitions, tourism, theatre, books, toys and games.
