St Andrews ranked 12th in UK and 1st in Scotland for the quality and volume of its research according to 2008 RAE Exercise.

The results the Research Assessment Exercise for 2008 published today (18th December 2008) establishes that in terms of both the strength and depth of its research the School of Economics & Finance at the University of St Andrews is the top Economics department in Scotland and one of strongest in the UK.

On a measure of 'research power' – which takes into account both the quality of research and the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) research-active staff who were returned in the RAE – the St Andrews School of Economics & Finance ranks 1st in Scotland and 12th in the UK. Research power is an important measure because it indicates both international research quality and critical mass. It reflects the basis on which research funding will be allocated in March 2009.

According to RAE 2008 data, 100 per cent of research by St Andrews School of Economics & Finance is of international quality (2* and above), with 55 per cent of research defined as ‘world-leading' or ‘internationally excellent' (3* and above).
